We’ll be talking about coconut oil shortly. But first, who doesn’t like the fruits coconuts? These drupes are some of the most delicious fruits you’d come across. Although people like to drink coconut water, probably because it’s a bit sweet, as it doesn’t have any usefulness – health-wise.
Bad, Bad Coconut Oil!
Coconut oil, on the other hand, is rich in various aspects. In fact, it’s currently being used for cooking by people all over the world. This is mainly due to the claims from people on the internet about it being a lot healthier oil.
They claim coconut oil is a lot more valuable to health than the rest available oils. Well, these claims are bogus, and sadly enough, they are the reverse. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), coconut oil is not healthy to consume; in fact, it is as unhealthy as consuming beef dripping and butter.
The AHA published a key advisory notice in the journal circulation regarding fats and how they affect cardiovascular diseases. In their findings, they concluded that coconut oil is bad for the health as it’s packed with saturated fats.
As a matter of fact, 82% of coconut oil is made of saturated fat. This is far more than those obtained in sunflower oil (10%), peanut oil (17%), olive oil (14%), and the regular butter (63%). You see, saturated fats are not like other normal fat. They can increase the number of bad cholesterol roaming around your bloodstream. This, in essence, increases your risk of getting heart disease in the near future.
Saturated fats can be found in lard and butter, biscuits, cheese, cakes, cream, fatty meats among other things – including of course coconut oil.
Wrong Notion, Not So Healthy Coconut Oil
The AHA review notes that “according to a recent survey, 72% of the American public believes coconut oil is healthy. In fact, these people regard it as a ‘healthy food’. This is greater than 37% of nutritionists who think otherwise.” It also notes that the disconnect between the public and expert opinion can be traced back to the marketing of coconut oil in media.
A meta-analysis of several experiments carried out has conclusively indicated that both butter and coconut oil when it comes to increasing the number of bad cholesterol in your body are the same evil.
The AHA concluded that “because coconut oil does more harm (increases the number of bad cholesterol in your body which is a cause of cardiovascular disease) than good, as it has no known good sides, the AHA advises against using coconut oil for cooking. In one short sentence, the American Heart Association has advised against using coconut oil for cooking.
No to Coconut Oil, Yes to Olive Oil
If your bad cholesterol levels are already high, you should know that eating meals made with coconut oil are potentially dangerous. The AHA suggests swapping coconut oil for olive oil as it would help you reduce your bad cholesterol levels just as much as using cholesterol-lowering drugs would.
We are guessing you’ve had a proper orientation about the health benefits of coconut oil. So what do you do when next you hear someone claiming that consuming coconut oil is perfect for you? Unsaturated fats are the preferred fats for consumption; you can find them in fish oil, avocados, seeds, and nuts. So stay away from coconut oil, except you plan to use it externally like in skincare or hair care.
